Superfood

Turmeric has been a staple in our household for almost 4 years now. Since it has a really subtle flavor, we get to add it to every dish we make from scratch at home. It makes the dish turn a bit orange or yellow, but who cares about the color, right? I did a bit of digging and found out that not only is it routinely used as a key spice in many South Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines but it is also firmly rooted into Ayurvedic (which is a traditional system of medicine that dates back a thousands years ago) healing. a lot of long-established practices of medicine have recognized turmeric, which is a relative of the more popular ginger, as a 'spice powerhouse' of sorts. Turmeric can help our body in many ways, such as in how it:

  • Assists the immune system
  • Helps cleanse the skin and provide nourishment
  • Aids in digestion
  • Promotes healthy blood and liver functions
Some essential vitamins and nutrients naturally found in turmeric are:

  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamins B-1, B-2, B-3
  • Potassium
  • Phosphorous
  • Calcium
  • Other phytonutrients
  • Manganese
  • Zinc
If you've been following recent health trends like Mr. D and I do, then you're probably fully aware of how important antioxidants are for everybody's health. The antioxidants in turmeric, such as vitamin C and others, actually come from active compounds within the spice called curcuminoids. What a lot of people may not be aware of is just how powerful the antioxidants delivered by these curcuminoids can be. Amazingly, curcumonoids can deliver antioxidants which are:

  • A whopping 5 to 8 times stronger than vitamin E and vitamin C
  • 3 times more powerful than grape seed or pine bark extract
It's really easy to see why turmeric may be a valuable addition to anyone's current healthy lifestyle, and even easier to see why modern researchers around the globe have focused a great deal of research on the properties of this awesome spice.

I remember some years ago when Mr. D was dealing with a cyst on his wrist. He said that it was painful in the cold and rainy seasons, so we were looking for ways to make it go away for good. A surgeon friend of ours suggested that we should have it surgically removed. Our family is allergic to hospitals haha, so it just wasn't in the cards to go under the knife to get rid of it. Enter turmeric, the superfood. After reading up on this wonder spice (that it visibly shrinks cysts and tumors by using it, in a matter of months), we decided to add it to every dish we cooked and viola the cyst was gone just shy of 6 months. It's that powerful. Who needs surgery?

Readily available in our leading supermarkets nationwide (do try to find the organic or kosher brands though), and can even be bought fresh in your nearest local wet and dry market. Just ask for "luyang dilaw." Why not add it to your diet today?
