A closer look at Ballet

As a child, I never really quite understood why my mom kept pushing us, her kids to be involved different kinds of extracurricular activities. Now that I'm a mother living in the age of information, after a ton of research, we (Mr. D and I) discovered that these extracurricular activities can do wonders for our kids. Music and sport activities are positive for all children's well being. Children who participate in sports have been known to get higher school grades, and have high self-esteem. These kids are also generally healthier due to the increase in activity, and have stronger social networks than children who are not involved in any sport.

Kids involved in music activities are often better adjusted, have increased academic performance, ability to think creatively, emotional expression, and emotional understanding. They typically have better memory skills than those who are not musically trained. With so many benefits, it just became a matter of which activity to choose in the end.

For my girls, ballet was the first thing that came to mind, it involves both music and sport (dance). Ballet promotes physical strength and agility, can boost concentration, develops an understanding of music and rhythm and generates a love of movement. Whether your child is 1 or 14, she can benefit from age-appropriate ballet instructions. It is known to improve muscular strength, flexibility and range of motion. Ballet training also boosts coordination and balance while correcting poor alignment. Combinations that involve jumping and leaping increase heart rate, which can improve endurance, stamina and overall cardiovascular health. Like other forms of dance, ballet can improve body awareness and physical self-control.

In addition to its physical benefits, ballet can also help to improve children's mental and emotional health. The training in classical ballet instills a sense of pride and accomplishment, which can boost self-esteem. As children improve and master more challenging movement combinations, they feel more self-assured, which can carry over into other areas of their lives. Dance training can also be a great way to relax and use excess energy productively after school.

Ballet classes also provide a social outlet for kids. Attending classes regularly can help young children develop their social skills. Ballet and other dance forms help foster teamwork, communication, trust and cooperation. It can also help children to forge new friendships, overcome shyness or awkwardness in social situations and reduce the fears associated with being in a group and performing in front of an audience. Now that we've established how beneficial ballet is, let's check out one of the schools in the metro that has made its mark in the art of ballet.

Twinkle Toes Ballet and Music Academy is the 1st Ballet Toddler Day Care School in the Philippines to offer Baby Ballet Classes for kids as young as 1 year - 5 years old. Their program is especially designed to expand each child’s individual creativity and artistic abilities through creative imagery and role-play rather than the technical approach traditionally associated with ballet. It develops an appreciation of rhythm and timing, music, movement and grace during the most receptive time in their lives. This program also develops gross motor skills, stimulates social interaction and ability to follow instruction, and gain confidence to take that first step on stage!

You might have seen Lisa Macuja together with the Twinkle Toes ballerinas as guests in one of the episodes of the Ryzza Mae Show. Celebrities like Mutya Orquia (ballet) and Alessandra de Rossi (zumba) have also been spotted taking part in the classes they offer.
