This is actually a staple in our home which Dave and I drink on a daily basis. We have been buying fresh Turmeric root at our local wet and dry market every weekend for the past 6 years, that was way before we started the tea habit. I could still remember that it only costs 20 pesos a kilo at the time, and we were just among a handful of people purchasing the root from the only vendor who had it in his fresh produce stall. Today, a kilo of fresh Turmeric root costs 100 pesos because of the high demand. Even though the price skyrocketed, it is still worth buying.</div>

I wrote an article about the superfood Turmeric back in 2015, which you can read <a href="http://www.stretchyourpeso.com/2015/03/turmeric-superfood.html" target="_blank">here</a>. I tackled the major health benefits it gives us and gave you enough reasons to add it to your family's diet. According to research, Turmeric is known to have more than 600 health
 benefits. It has many anti-inflammatory properties that help in 
treating various health problems like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid 
arthritis and ulcerative colitis. Turmeric is also known to help people with cancer, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s 
disease, and high cholesterol. Its anti-oxidant properties can prevent cataracts and different kinds of cancer. It reduces 
inflammation caused by wounds, acne and other skin conditions. Hence, a 
little bit of turmeric added to various foods can provide these benefits everyday. We add Turmeric powder to all of our home-cooked meals and for a couple of months now, enjoy it in tea form. </div>

To tell you frankly, brewing fresh Tumeric tea only came to mind when I started collecting Japanese tea sets late last year haha. I was never fond of teas, was more of a heavy coffee drinker. Getting pregnant with our fourth child and exclusively breastfeeding him after birth up to the present, made anything with caffeine a no-go for me. One of the reasons I decided to collect Japanese tea sets, was to actually encourage myself to start drinking and enjoying teas. It worked pretty well, I am now an official tea lover.</div>

Water <span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}"><span class="UFICommentBody _1n4g"><span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}"><span class="UFICommentBody _1n4g"><br /><br /><b>Note:</b> You can substitute homemade Chicken Stock instead of Butter and Water for babies 1 year and older</span></span><br /><br /><b>Instructions:</b><br />Peel sweet potatoes and cut them into cubes<br />Put them in a pot<br />Add 3-5 pinches of salt, turmeric powder and black pepper<br />Add water - just enough to cover the sweet potatoes half way<br />Turn on the stove<br />Bring it up to a boil then put on low and simmer until soft<br />Set aside<br /><br />Take the quail eggs out of the shell and place them in a bowl<br />Heat up 1/2 cup of water in a small pot<br />Add the quail eggs and turn off the heat, mix<br />Pour into the pot of sweet potatoes<br />Use a hand blender to turn it into mash directly in the pot <br />Add the butter and more water/stock until you get the right consistency</span></span> <br />

adults like me enjoy it as a side dish. By the way, sweet potato is rich
 in Vitamin C & E, a great source of Manganese & Beta-Carotene

of protein for babies a year older and above. Try it and see if your 
baby likes it as much as ours does. <br />

Making your own baby food is way healthier and safer for your baby. And it doesn't come with a hefty price tag those popular branded baby food does.</span></div>

You can choose from a variety of tools and equipment for making it, which are all readily available at malls or supermarkets. If you don't mind a little elbow grease then you can use an old school Japanese strainer made of fine horse hair, a hand masher, a ricer or a manual juicer. If you're in a hurry, have money to spend and unfortunately like me, have weak arms, then you might want to have a go at a blender, a food processor or my personal favorite a hand emulsifier. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Now, should we boil or steam? </span><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Based on a lot of research we found out that some nutrients in vegetables, known as water-soluble vitamins, dissolve 
in water. And the longer vegetables are submerged in water, the more 
vitamins seep out, much more so when heat is involved. So steaming really is the better cooking method to use. Don't forget to season with salt or a bit of natural sweetener to adjust your baby food to your baby's liking. Our Little Miss Banshee, we found out, tends to lean towards savory more than sweet. She hates apples and bananas. She likes pumpkin, yam, and carrots. Ok, those are kind of sweet, so maybe she just doesn't like fruits and is just more into veggies.</span></div>

Just make sure the cuts are as uniform as possible for even cooking all throughout. We season ours with Turmeric powder, sea salt and black pepper. Then steam until tender but not overcooked. Then we blitz it in the blender until we reach the right consistency and get rid of as much lumps as we can. </span></div>

Since they don't have preservatives they don't last very long even when stored in the fridge. I have experienced that first hand and I've definitely learned my lesson.</span></div>

So when Kale started to get recognition back in 2010, I was up to date on that particular trend in the making, which really took off by 2012. Yes, I knew about Kale Chips even before it popped up everywhere in the states (it was almost cliche) and became famous over the internet.<br />

But what is Kale exacty? Known as the "Queen of Greens," <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kale" rel="nofollow">Kale</a> or borecole is a member of the cabbage family that comes in two forms. There is Kale, which has smooth leaves and then Curly Kale, which is the most common of the two and as the name suggests has crinkly leaves. It is a vegetable that has green or purple leaves sometimes tinged with blue that grow in a loose rosette at the top of the stem instead of forming a head like most cabbages do.</div>

I remember Tuscan Kale being cooked together with chicken in one of my favorite episodes of Top Chef Season 3 by CJ and Trey on the frozen pasta dinners elimination challenge, it was the winning dish by the way. It's a mixture of onions, celery and carrots that is usually used as the base for a lot of sauces, soups and broths. Saute the mirepoix and let the diced up vegetables sweat out for a bit to release the juices, season with just enough herbs, salt and pepper. </span></span></div>

When it comes to a boil put the heat on low, adjust the seasoning as you desire and let it simmer for 5 minutes before turning off the stove. And that's it.</span></span></div>

<br />Happy to have found a number of sources of Kale, but I'm definitely considering trying to grow my own because of the hefty price tag it comes with. <br /><br />If you want your family to be healthy, there's no avoiding the leafy green vegetables, and Kale is a powerhouse when it comes to nourishment. It is a good source of calcium, fiber, iron, folic acid, amino acids, vitamin A, vitamin C, antioxidant flavonoids, lutein and magnesium.
