Money-Smart Kids

One of the article worthy highlights of this year's Blogapalooza, was the Laurus Enterprise booth which featured the Robert Kiyosaki Live in Manila event, the Cashflow Board Game and Money-Smart Kids. Dave zoned in on them because he was familiar with Robert Kiyosaki and has read some of his best-selling works like, Rich Dad Poor Dad. There we found 2 books on financial literacy that are definite must-reads for parents who want their kids to be money-smart. We purchased both books right away without hesitation. It was authored by wife, mother and neurodevelopmental pediatrician, Dr. Marnie Moya-Prudencio and of course we got them signed too! Meeting a fellow parent with the same concerns as we do when it comes to our children's overall education was very refreshing.

The first book, How To Be A Money-Smart Parent And Raise A Money-Smart Kid is all about the author's personal journey on getting financial education which isn't taught in traditional schools. The 138 paged book talks about the 7 developmental stages of financial literacy that can set you and your child up to reach financial freedom in the future.

  1. Stage One: Recognizing the Use and Value of Money
  2. Stage Two: Identifying Different Denominations of Money
  3. Stage Three: Applying Mathematical Operations in Money Transactions
  4. Stage Four: Defining the Purpose of Money
  5. Stage Five: Managing Money Strategically
  6. Stage Six: Investing and Accumulating Assets
  7. Stage Seven: Financial Freedom
Financial literacy isn't included in our school system's curriculum, so it is up to us to get the proper education with regards to this admittedly very important aspect in life. The book's author has simplified the rather complicated topic of financial education, making it easy enough for anyone to understand and apply in everyday life. Dr. Marnie definitely covered all the bases without making it a stretch with her practical and easy to follow steps.

One of the eye opening tidbits that can be found in this book is about the education system that we have today, which mostly follows the US General Education Board founded in 1903 by the Rockefeller Foundation, whether knowingly or unknowingly. The purpose of the education board was to introduce compulsory education to the people based on the following guidelines:

"The purpose of the foundation [General Education Board] was to use the power of money, not to raise the level of education in America, as was widely believed at the time, but to influence the direction of that education... The object was to use classrooms to teach attitudes that encourage people to be passive and submissive to their rulers. The goal was - and is - to create  citizens who were educated enough for productive work under supervision but not enough to question authority or seek to rise above their class. True education was to be restricted to the sons and daughters of the elite. For the rest, it would be better to produce skilled workers with no particular aspirations other than to enjoy life."
- G. Edward Griffin;
The Creature From Jekyll Island

Now that definitely answers the question as to why our traditional schools don't educate us on how to be money-smart. That is not the goal of our education system today which is sad. Financial education might not be the most important (compared to learning about God), but it definitely isn't something that should be excluded in our schools and only provided for the elite.

I am not what you can consider as a money-smart individual. Having an OFW parent who literally just showered me with material things didn't help and of course I am also a result of the same educational system that doesn't deem us worthy of being financially literate so what can we really expect, right? This book definitely helped me understand a lot about the real value of money and its purpose, and how to achieve financial freedom that would not only benefit myself but also my kids.

Take the first step towards the understanding of money with the help of this book. It raises awareness on how financially illiterate we really are and how to undo it with an open mind and practical applications. Let it explain to you how you can teach your child financial literacy skills that will pave his/her way to financial freedom . Get your copy now and stretch your peso, just like we did!
